September is the new January for household admin.

Hi there,

School's back, the holidays are over and the evenings are closing in. It's a good month to get the house in order. Not the cupboards. The paperwork.

The quickest win is renewals. Car, home, breakdown, broadband, mobile, subscriptions. Most roll over automatically, and the new price isn't always the best one on offer.

 

This month's one job: put every renewal date in one place

About 20 minutes.

1. Search your email for “renewal” and “your policy”.
2. For each one, note the provider, what it covers, the renewal date and what you pay.
3. Set a reminder four weeks before each date, so there's time to compare.
4. Cancel one subscription you haven't used since the spring.
5. Keep the list somewhere your partner can see it too.

What’s changed: the Budget is on 28 October

The new Chancellor, John Healey, delivers his first Budget on Wednesday 28 October. No tax changes have been announced yet, so it's worth ignoring the rumours and not acting on them.

One thing is already settled. The pension change we covered in July goes ahead for deaths from 6 April 2027. The government says the detailed regulations will be laid later this year.

We'll pick out anything in the Budget that affects families in the November note.
