The monthly note · November 2026

Talk about power of attorney while it's still an easy chat.

An adult daughter and her mother at home, going through health records together

Hi there,

Carers UK says 12,000 people become unpaid carers every day, and many don't see themselves that way. If you've started doing a parent's shopping, sorting their post or sitting in on GP calls, that could be you.

Carers Rights Day is on Thursday 19 November. It's a good prompt to check what help you're entitled to, and to have one conversation before you need it.

A lasting power of attorney can only be made while someone can still make their own decisions. That’s why the easy moment is now.

This month's one job: have the power of attorney conversation

About an hour, ideally over a cup of tea.

1. Pick a calm moment. Not the day after a hospital appointment.
2. Explain the two types: one for property and money, one for health and care.
3. Ask who they'd trust, and whether they've already made one.
4. Find out where the key papers are: bank, pension, house deeds and will.
5. Agree a next step and a date. You can make an LPA online on GOV.UK.

What’s changed: Carers Rights Day, 19 November

Carers UK runs the day to help the UK's 5.8 million unpaid carers understand their rights and get support. Its website has guides and local events. If you're caring for someone, it's worth ten minutes.

The Budget was on 28 October. If anything in it changes inheritance tax, pensions, care costs or carers’ benefits, we will add it here before this note goes out.

The Family plan (£8.99 a month) links up to five people, with shared and private cards. It helps when brothers and sisters are sharing the caring and nobody wants to be the only one who knows where things are.
